January 20, 2026 Minutes
Opening Prayer by David Watson
Roll call taken virtually: David Watson, Bulus Audu Daniel, Jason Vickers, Luther Oconer, Bishop Scott Jones, Kathy Rohrs. Teresa Marcus as GMC Rep.
David made a motion to approve the minutes from our November meeting. All approved. Articles of Faith Update
David shared that the writing team made progress in revisions requested; there is still work to do and another meeting has been scheduled. The magnitude of this work means it’s important to move through them carefully, and the team is doing work at a steady but not rushed pace.
The process for presenting the articles of faith to General Conference was discussed, and the commission agrees to the importance of giving ample time for feedback before the May 1 deadline for legislation.
Ordination Working Group
• Kathy shared the group is continuing to work on dealing with some of the inconsistencies surrounding the role of deacons in the Book of Doctrines and Disciplines and is working to have an update for our next meeting. David shared a hope to honor historical values of deacon and elder, and to think long-term and theologically. Kathy shared that any proposals will come back to our commission for discussion and approval.
Kingdom Advancement and Discipleship Collaboration
- Kathy made a new proposal for a task force rather than ex-oRicio membership (see motion from November). Kathy made the motion; Luther seconded. All in favor. We will include Teresa Marcus in communications to get this started. Luther Oconer and Gabi Kopas were nominated and willing to serve.
- The KAC has created an online library of resources, which can be found here: https://app.globalmethodist.world/search
A link to provide resource recommendations is forthcoming. Bishop Jones recommended that we recommend this resource be promoted broadly and soon
with the endorsement of our commission. Teresa shared that this is in process, and she will add our commission’s endorsement.
Campus Ministry Approval
• Bishop Jones is in communication with a team of campus ministers and will have a recommendation for us at the next meeting regarding the approval of campus ministries.
Working Group Next Steps
- It would be helpful to have a more robust resource area on our page as well - How do we have resources that serve the church, and what we may need to do
We need resources from this committee that can resource the bishops in their teaching oRice in order for them to resource the church.
What are the issues that need to be spoken to? We discussed the need for an ability to address issues that come up organically, but also a need to focus on answering, “What are the most significant issues facing the church today? “
David mentioned a clear understanding of gender identity; Jason brought up a proper disposition towards rulers, nation-states -how do we posture ourselves towards civic leaders? Luther mentioned a concise teaching on theological topics: why do we believe in the Trinity, why does God allow suRering? There are a number of issues that we can helpfully address, potentially leading to an FAQ page on our commission’s site along with more resources.
Bishop Jones brought a new item for discussion. As there is no commission other than this one for youth ministry in the life of the church, he would like us to serve an in advisory role with an idea. Three young men in Nigeria want to hold a global youth assembly for the GMC. Bishop Jones asked for permission to move forward in this idea, and we agreed to it. He will report back with any updates.
Teresa mentioned working with our delegations to share if we are interested in being nominated for 2026. Jason requested an update as to the nominations process, and Teresa is checking with Tom Lambrecht for clarity.
David adjourned the meeting.
